Welcome to Athenry

Thank you for taking the time to visit the Web site of our Heritage town. I am sure that you will find the information available extremely interesting, and well worth your while browsing through its pages.
Athenry (meaning the King's Ford) is an ancient market and historic town, set in the middle of the fertile plains of East Galway. It was established as a Market town in the 13th Century and its streetscape, reflects it's medieval past, with narrow streets and town walls. The best preserved section of the walls is that wound the North Gate. Athenry King John's Castle, for which I, as Ireland's first Minister for Heritage Affairs, was responsible for initiating its Conservation and Restoration in 1989, is also a major feature in the town. This subsequently conferred Heritage Status on our town, thereby making it an ideal place to live, or for a visit. For anyone planning to visit the town, I strongly suggest that you read the history pages before you arrive, so that you get the most out of your time here and ensure that you visit the Castle and Heritage Centre; while you're with us.
Those of you who lived in the town in the past and have for various reasons had to leave will probably find the sport pages of most interest. I am sure you will enjoy reading about the achievements of our many local Teams.
Athenry has lots to offer potential entrepreneurs or industrialists with acres of I.D.A services sites and only a few miles from Galway Airport and thriving Docks, there is also frequent bus and rail service to Galway and beyond.
I would like to congratulate Kieran Glynn on his excellent design of this web site. You are to be commended on your initiative and I believe your efforts will be amply awarded with an increased number of Visitors to our unique and beautiful town.
